Twelve year-old Ivan Ronnel Mabahin claimed the first gold medal for Tacurong City after winning the Wushu Dao Shu (Broadsword) Event at the 2019 Batang Pinoy National Championships in Puerto Prinsesa, Palawan.

Mabahin, a Grade 7 student of Tacurong National High School, is trained and coached by Maribeth Baba who is a teacher of San Emmanuel National High School.

Mabahin’s gold medal is also the first for Tacurong since it started joining the national event years ago.

He only managed to get a silver medal in last year’s competition.

Dao Shu is one of the events in Wushu Taolu or forms that use a sword in performing martial arts patterns, acrobatic movements, and techniques.

Wushu, a Chinese term for martial arts, is becoming one of the focus sports of Tacurong and seen as a potential source of gold medals like any other focus sports including arnis.

Mabahin and other athletes of Tacurong started taking the tournament floors on the second day of competitions yesterday and did not waste time in racking up medals.

After Mabahin, Tacurong’s other athletes also started racking up gold medals on the second day of the tournament.

Arnis players collected additional three gold medals led by Christian Dave Bucio who won gold in Double Weapon Non-traditional.
