Kapihan sa Kahanginan talks about Urban Nutrition Governance

“I am betting my mayoralty in my commitment to address malnutrition problem in Tacurong City”.

That was the bold statement made by Mayor Angelo ‘Roncal’ Montilla in front of the local media during the Kapihan sa Kahanginan held on October 28 at the city hall.

The same statement was made by the mayor in September when Zuellig Family Foundation declared Tacurong as a pilot area in the implementation of Urban Nutrition Governance Program that aims to address the problem of stunting and wasting caused by malnutrition.

During the Kapihan, ZFF Account Officer Julie Ann Llavore said that the implementation of the nutrition governance program is anchored on the newly enacted First 1,000 Days Law.

“The first 1,000 days beginning from conception until the baby’s two years of age are the most critical period in ensuring quality health and nutrition of both the mother and her baby”, Llavore said.

Meanwhile, Vice Mayor Lino Montilla committed that the Sanggunian will pass the necessary legislation to make sure that the city’s nutrition programs are realized.

Other resource persons in the Kapihan are City Health Officer Giovanni Deles and City Nutrition Action Officer Rogelio Garcia.

City Councilor Lalaine Montilla co-hosted the Kapihan who also enjoined all pregnant women in the city to visit their barangay health centers and avail of various benefits during pregnancy and after giving birth.

Councilor Montilla also invited all pregnant women to attend the launching program of the First 1,000 Days Law and roll-out of Urban Nutrition Governance Program on November 4, 2019 at the city gym.

Tacurong a pilot area for implementation of First 1K days nutrition law

Tacurong City’s outstanding health governance programs paved way for it to be chosen as pilot area in the implementation of a new law that provides ease of access to health care and nutrition programs.

Zuellig Family Foundation and Nutrition International will help the national government to capacitate local leaders in improving the delivery of nutrition services to their constituents and the enactment of Republic Act 11148 or the First 1000 Days Law expedites the objective.

The law desires to give marginalized families easier access to health and nutrition programs in the first 1000 days, beginning from conception until two years of age of a child.

Tacurong City is joined by Puerto Prinsesa City and Tagum City as pilot areas.

Former Mayor Lina Montilla’s active involvement in the health governance programs of ZFF and the city government’s success in championing health were primary reasons for the city’s inclusion in the list of pilot areas.

During the launch of ZFF and Nutrition International’s Urban Nutrition Governance Project on July 10 in Metro Manila, former Mayor Lina joined his brother, incumbent Mayor Angelo Montilla to the event.

As pilot city, Tacurong will get the opportunity to receive all the assistance that aim to improve health and nutrition outcomes.

On August 15, ZFF started its engagement with Tacurong by having a dialogue with Mayor Angelo Montilla and other officials.

Part of the dialogue was giving the local officials detailed concept about the project and the specific interventions ZFF will provide the city.

Vice Mayor Lino Montilla also joined the dialogue and committed to facilitate the appropriate legislations needed to expedite the project. (ASF, LGU Information)
