Tacurong City conducts 3rd outreach program in North Cotabato

The City of Tacurong brought magic and music, as well as its usual medical, dental, and haircut services, to the earthquake struck municipality of Tulunan, in particular, Barangay Bagumbayan, on November 26, 2019.

This leg of outreach program is the city’s third in North Cotabato after it previously visited Camp Balatukan Evacuation Center in Makilala and Lapan Evacuation Center in Barangay Perez, Kidapawan City on November 6 and 15, respectively.

As is previously done, City Mayor Angelo O. Montilla led a convoy of trucks, buses, and other utility vehicles transporting loads of relief goods and personnel from LGU Tacurong, doctors and nurses, as well as volunteers from the different sectors and organizations in the city such as the Filipino- Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Tacurong City PNP and Joint Task Force Talakudong.

Also accompanying the group were City Vice Mayor Lino O. Montilla and City Councilors Lalaine Montilla, Welson Ferrer, and Lino Ledda; and the different heads of offices of the LGU.

The outreach program was set up in Bagumbayan Elementary School (BES) where 359 students attend class in makeshift tents; the school buildings suffered structural damages due to the 6.5 magnitude earthquake that hit Tulunan on October 16.

As usual, the Tacurong contingents offered free medical and dental services, as well as free medicines. The group of doctors and nurses who volunteered for the outreach were from the City Health Services Office, the Sultan Kudarat Medical Society, the Department of Education, and army doctors from the Philippine Army. Psychologists and social workers also offered psychosocial analysis services.

Tacurong’s LGBTQ+ organization, the Makasining Lahi, also offered free haircuts.

But to up the ante and give joy to the affected students, Tacurong City brought two magicians who performed tricks and conducted parlor games. Prizes were ‘haul-as-much-as-you-can’ toys, candies, and treats. Each student also received a pair of rubber slippers.

The LGU’s musical band also tagged along to perform songs at the venue. A jamming session ensued participated by the kids and senior citizens; Tacurong’s elected officials as well as BES’s principal, Bruno Pancer, also gamely rendered songs.

Relief goods donated by Tacurongnons, the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and Park Bogum Global Fans among others were also distributed to 450 residents.

The outreach was able to cater to 392 persons in medical checkup, 114 in dental services, and 193 in haircuts.

“Others have come to our aid when disaster struck, but none was as complete as the services provided by Tacurong City,” said Municipal Councilor Jojo Ortizo in his message of thanks during the event. And indeed, the people of Tacurong did not only send the customary relief services but went the extra mile by sending magic and music to elicit smiles from the families of Barangay Bagumbayan.

This outreach program was made possible through the coordination of LGU Tacurong with Bagumbayan Punong Baragay Vaneza S. Sailama and the municipal government of Tulunan led by Mayor Pip Limbungan. (YMR, LGUTac-Info)
