To abate the prevalence of teenage pregnancies in the city, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Tacurong joins in “The Challenge Initiative” (TCI) of the Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) and Zuellig Family Foundation (ZFF).
TCI aims to capacitate various LGUs to deliver interventions on issues surrounding the Sexual and Reproductive Health of their Adolescent Population through employing relevant approaches. This also corresponds to Executive Order No. 141 issued by President Rodrigo Duterte mandating the prioritization of implementations to address teenage pregnancy cases in the country.
In a virtual meeting on August 18, 2021, LGU-Tacurong and POPCOM exchanged discourse on the rate of Adolescent Pregnancies and Live Births on age groups 10-14 years old and 15-19 years old in the city.
According to the 2017 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), Tacurong has the 3rd Highest Pregnancy Rate among adolescents aged 15-19 years old in Region 12.
Additionally, the recorded number of teenage pregnancies in the city from January 2021 to June 2021 is already at 78.
With these data on hand, LGU-Tacurong is steadfast in performing necessary undertakings to alleviate adolescent pregnancy and childbirth.
A City Leadership Team (CLT) centered on resolving these concerns was established and spearheaded by City Mayor Lino O. Montilla.
LGU-Tacurong will also enter and ink a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with POPCOM to further strengthen the implementation of programs to mitigate teenage pregnancies in the city.
Through this partnership with POPCOM, more elaborate and specific methodologies will be carried out by LGU-Tacurong in reducing these problems.
Mayor Montilla, as well as the other heads of offices of the LGU, also ensured their full commitment, participation, and support on this endeavor.
POPCOM Region 12, with the leadership of Regional Director Edwin Mateo Quijano, also guaranteed to assist and guide LGU-Tacurong in materializing its vision towards eradicating teenage pregnancy in the city.
