Thirty (30) subsistence farmers in Barangay Kalandagan this city became the beneficiaries of a 16-week crop and livestock management training of the Department of Agriculture (DA). Dubbed Project LINA (Livelihood Improvement Through Needed Agricultural Intervention), the program was facilitated by LGU Tacurong through the Office of Agricultural Services headed by City Agriculturist Leoncia Nebres and the DA’s Agricultural Training Institute (ATI).
The program is part of the DA’s Tier 2 – Extension Services for the 22 Poorest Provinces in the Philippines (T2-ES22PPP) and has a working budget of Php1 million. It aims to capacitate and empower farm families through trainings and help them increase their annual household income by at least 20%.
On the ground, LGU Tacurong conducted a community needs assessment and visioning with the beneficiaries; the latter were able to choose the livelihood that they wanted to receive ranging from crops to livestock.
The training entitled “Integrated Pest Management and Livestock Management” began in March 2018. On the same month, the DA delivered hybrid corn seeds to the beneficiaries. A parcel of land owned by Mr. Silvino Crispino, Jr. in Kalandagan was volunteered to be the corn farming’s laboratory.
In the following months leading to June 2018, the beneficiaries received their 4 goats (3 does and 1 buck) each, swine, rice seeds, and fertilizers.
On 11 July 2018, the 30 beneficiaries officially completed their training. A graduation program was held for the purpose and was attended by Hon. Welson Ferrer, chairperson of SP Committee on Agriculture, Hon. Geronimo Arzagon, Leoncia R. Nebres, City Agriculturist, Abdul Dayaan, Center Director ATI Region XII, and Innocencio Padilla, Supervising Officer Provincial Agriculturist Office.
“Nagapasalamat gid ako sa mga sapat nga nahatag sa amon. Kabay pa nga mapadugay kag mapalambo pa ini namon para maghatag man ang DA sa iban pa nga mga barangay,” said Joselito Ordoyo, one of the beneficiaries during the graduation program. (YMR, LGUTac-Info)
