From foot trails to four lanes; from a hike to the next town’s market, to its very own vibrant economy: Tacurong has indeed come very far 65 years after its founding.
On August 3, 2016, the City of Tacurong celebrated its 65th foundation anniversary with the annual Tacurong Day celebration.
Beginning at 6:30 am, a Holy Mass was held and attended by City Mayor Lina O. Montilla, other city officials, LGU employees, senior citizens, representatives from both the private and public sectors, barangay officials and residents, students and teachers, the peacekeepers, and guests.
The annual headgear parade followed suit, which was truly a spectacle of creativity, craftsmanship, and sensibility in decorating Tacurong’s traditional kudong. The parade was participated by 13 organized groups from the different sectors of the city; it started and ended at the Tacurong City Hall grounds and traversed the main streets of the city. Monte Vicenteau Resort took home the first prize worth Php5000.
The opening ceremony, which was held at the Tacurong Sports and Cultural Center, conferred various awards including the Top 20 Outstanding Business Taxpayers, which was topped by Tacurong Fit Mart, Inc.; Outstanding Taxpayers for Real Property Taxes (RPT), topped by Mr. John Garcia of Brgy. Poblacion; Outstanding Barangays in Collection of RPT, which was topped Brgy. New Passi; and the Talakudong Tourism Awards, which were conferred to DOT-accredited establishments namely Edjin Pension House, Woodland Tourist Inn, Capitol Air Travel, and Monte Vicenteau Resort. The Lupong Tagpamayapa Incentive Awards 2016, which were given to top-performing lupong tagapamayapa among the 20 barangays, were also bagged by Brgy. New Isabela in 3rd place, Brgy. Tina in 2nd place, and Brgy. Calean in 1st place. The grand slam winner Brgy. Upper Katungal was exempted this year.
As she recalled the beginnings of Tacurong, the city mayor, in her speech, shared the glory with both the local government workers and the constituents of the city. “Dasig ang aton pag-uswag kay tungod sa aton unity, cooperation, kag teamwork. Kabay pa nga ipadayon naton ini.”
The opening ceremony also served as the opening salvo of the Talakudong Festival 2016 and the 7th Sulong Tacurong Business Week.
Simultaneous with other activities was the the Farmers’ Festival: Agri and Producers’ Fair where all twenty barangays, in their own bahay kubo lining up the City Hall grounds, exhibited the bounty of their respective areas. Each barangay also sponsored a fiesta lunch which they shared with festival-goers.
In the afternoon, a Larong Pinoy took place followed by an inter-barangay singing contest. At night, a battle of the bands entertained the crowd; a 15-minute long fireworks display marked the end of the celebration. (Yen Robles, LGU-Tacurong Information)
