The streets came alive with dazzling colors and friendly smiles in the City of Tacurong during the Lumbayag sa Dalanon kag Kiay kiay sa Talakudong street dancing and field demonstration competition, a highlight of the 2019 Talakudong Festival held last September 18.

Talakudong Festival is the celebration of the charter anniversary of Tacurong. It is the most featured of the four festivals celebrated in the city. This year it bears the theme “Ipasundayag ang imo Katahum, Dakbanwa nga Mainabyanun”. (Showcase your beauty, City of Goodwill)

And indeed, the city exemplified beauty and goodwill through various invitational activities and other events specifically aimed for the youth.

Instead of spending for celebrities, the city organized sports, arts, and talent activities in order to hone and develop the Tacurongnon youths’ potential so that one day they may lead Tacurong to greater heights. “Instead of senseless activities, we chose to spend on meaningful ones where our youth can participate. We are keeping them off the streets,” said City Mayor Angelo O. Montilla.

On September 9, the festival opened with a motorcade and the 1st Talakudong Float Parade; Monte Vicenteau Resort bagged the first place.

Simultaneous with the opening parade was an opening ceremony led by Mayor Montilla where he welcomed guest speaker Civil Service Commissioner Aileen Lourdes Lizada. The latter discussed the Existing Retirement Programs of the Government Employees in the Philippines.

For the next few days until its culmination on the 18th, Tacurongnons and other visitors from other areas were able to witness and participate in various competitions in sports, culture, and the arts.

The various sports competitions and activities included the 1st Angelo O. Montilla Volleyball and Basketball Tournaments, the 1st Mayor Angelo O. Montilla Talakudong Downhill Race Competition, the 1st Angelo O. Montilla Fide Rated Chess Cup, the 1st Angelo O. Montilla Badminton Tournament, 2019 Talakudong Sepak Takraw Championships, Talakudong Bicycle Tour, Talakudong Charity Fun Run, 1st Talakudong Kids Bicycle Race, 1st Talakudong Cross Country Race, and Aeromarathon.

The Arts also held a special place in the festival through the Drawing & Painting Adventures Workshop, a free art workshop provided to all interested youth in the city. Their output was judged at the Battle of the Brushes.

Talents also took center stage with the Mindanao-wide Indak Kudong Cultural Dance Contest, Talakudong Fold Dance and Street Jam Hip Hop Dance Contests, and Kantahan sa Siyudad Singing Contest. Montilla promised to up the ante next year so participants can expect a Php 100,000 prize for the hip hop competition.

The Makasining Lahi, an LGBTQ+ community in the city, also took part in the festivities through the annual Gupit Mo, Sagot Ko, a free haircut drive now on its 7th year and Queen Talakudong 2019 pageant.

Volunteerism was also not lost with the conduct of Dugong Konsehal bloodletting activity. This was also in celebration of the Civil Service Month and Philippine Councilors League Week.

One of the most anticipated events of Talakudong was the Search for the Mutya ng Lungsod ng Tacurong. This year, 20-year old Janel P. Frigillana, a BS Criminology student of the Southern Mindanao Institute of Technology, took home the crown.

Pet lovers also had their day in the sun with the 2019 Dogs’ Day organized by the City Veterinary Office while mobile gamers had a chance to show off their skills in the Smart Mobile Legend Tournament co-sponsored by Smart Communications.

Party-goers also had a good time at the foam party held at the Talakudong Grandstand while snacks, plants, and other goods were on display at the Talakudong Trade Fair.

Finally, bloggers and vloggers had a whale of a time featuring the different tribes of the street dancing and field demo competition while photographers captured moments to win best photo in the Igpat sang Kamera photo contest.

With participation and support from Tacurongnons and other visitors from all over the country, Talakudong Festival 2019 was deemed a roaring success. But the laurels won’t stop there. Each year it can assure, it will only get better.(YMR, LGUTac-Info)
