Tacurong is taking the arnis arena by storm, and its athletes’ recent dominance in the SEA Games only validated the city’s status as arnis hotbed.
In the 30th edition of this biennial event, Tacurong’s Jesfer Huquire and Sheena del Monte each bagged a gold medal after dominating their tough competitions, while Erlin Mae Busacay won a bronze medal.
The trio formed part of the elite contingent of national arnis players that captured a total of 14 golds, 4 silvers, and 2 bronzes in the said event.
In her interview after winning the gold, del Monte said that the national team expects so much from Tacurong, “kaya bawal matalo” (losing is not part of the deal).
As gold medalists, Huquire and del Monte will receive additional cash incentive from the city government amounting to P30 thousand, while Busacay will get P15 thousand.
The players credited their national coaches who prepared them well.
They also sang praises to their long-time coach and trainer Grand Master Efren Apresto who paved way for all their achievements.
GM Apresto, in a radio interview, said that becoming champions require long years of training and discipline, and several competitions to hone their skills.
“The support we’re getting from Tacurong LGU paved way for our players to join several national and even international competitions”, he said.
Aside from the three medalists, two other Tacurongnons, Mary Joy Marollano and Jonah Mae Dorero, were also part of the national team as reserve players. (ASF, LGU Information)
