Persons with diabilities in Tacurong now have new partners!

Members of the newly-created City Committee on Disability Affairs took their oath before Mayor Lina O. Montilla on July 23, 2014 during the culmination National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week.

The committee was created through Executive Order No. 7-2014. The committee is composed of three sub-committees: accessibility audit and monitoring team; employment, training and livelihood advocacy; and social protection (health, education, and access to information).

During the program, the new set of officers for the Community-based Volunteer on Disabled Persons or CBVRDP also took their oath before the mayor and the PWDs in attendance.

“Kailangan po nating magtulungan. Kailangang mayroon iisang boses ang mga PWDs para maiparating natin sa mga namumuno ang ating adbokasiya,” said Cheryl Cavan, General Manager of the Davao Jubilee Foundation. Cavan was the Tacurong’s guest speaker in the occasion.

Cavan, being a PWD herself, said that she understands the struggles of being one. “Pero wag po tayong manatili sa sulok. Marami po tayong magagawa kung magsasama-sama tayo,” she said.

LGU Tacurong City hopes to engage PWDs in various development efforts to promote inclusive development.

Meanwhile, hearing aids were distributed to eleven recipients during the program. Among them were 5-year olds Ashley Jane Abella and Moira Mae Tadura. Two PWDs also received prosthesis.
