A thousand students, health workers, employees, and government leaders are expected to participate in the regional celebration of the ASEAN Dengue Day and provincial kick-off of the anti-filariasis campaign on June 27, 2014 in Tacurong City.
The city government of Tacurong, being the host city, decided to merge the two events since dengue and filariasis are both mosquito-borne diseases.
The ASEAN Dengue Day, launched in 2011, is an annual advocacy campaign day for the ten ASEAN countries committed to dengue prevention and control. As the host of the regional celebration, LGU-Tacurong City will highlight the Department of Health’s Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue (ABKD)—a program that calls for regular weekly clean-up drives spearheaded by the barangay leaders. On the other hand, government leaders and health officers’ ceremonial intake of anti-filariasis drugs will highlight the kick-off of the anti-filariasis mass drug administration in Sultan Kudarat on the same day. Mass intake of anti-filariasis drugs will also be administered by Tacurong City’s health office during the said event.
Anti-filariasis Mass Drug Administration in Sultan Kudarat is conducted annually since 2008 as part of the National Filariasis Elimination Program. Filariasis is the second leading cause of permanent and long-term disability. (LGU Tacurong City Information)
