Festival goers flock to Baras Bird Sanctuary

Over six hundred tourists flocked to the 2nd Tacurong Bird Festival on May 28- 29, 2016 at the Baras Bird Sanctuary, Tacurong City. For a Php100 entrance fee, the festivalgoers were treated to a guided tour of the park and various art attack activities including face painting, plastic bottle recycling, origami, ball cap-making, coloring for toddlers, and keychain painting.

On the 28th, the bird festival opened with a motorcade starting from the Tacurong City Hall to the Baras Bird Sanctuary. An opening program followed suit attended by City Mayor Lina O. Montilla, Councilors Rodrigo Jamorabon, Psyche Sucaldito, and Wilson U. Ferrer; the different LGU empoyees and barangay officials, national line agencies, and private individuals. Thereafter, the attendees signed a pledge of commitment for the preservation, protection, and promotion of the Baras Bird Sanctuary led by the city mayor.

The festival also hosted a forum where attendees were graced by speakers Dr. Carmela P. Español, Institute of Biology of UP Diliman, on Ecosystem Function and Services; Forester Mangayao C. Macapodi, Chief of Conservation and Development Division DENR XII, on Endemism in Mindanao; and, PSUPT FELIX N SERVITA JR, Chief of Regional CIDU 12, on Wildlife Act and Enforcement.

Other festival activities included a photography contest in which subject was the rich and diverse ecosystem of the sanctuary, a bird costume contest, and coloring contest for kids.

According to the Tacurong City Tourism Office, the 2nd Tacurong Bird Festival attendance improved by 100% from that of the previous year and attracted more visitors from the different parts of Mindanao including Sarangani, South Cotabato, and North Cotabato among others.
