In a bid to help the city government in its efforts of restarting the local economy hardly hit by the COVID-19, the Department of Labor and Employment continues to provide it with various interventions, the latest of which is the hiring of twelve government interns deployed in the barangays where they reside. These interns will work under the Government Internship Program (GIP) of the DOLE that aims to provide young workers opportunity to work in government agencies. Basically, the program serves as a training ground for future government employees. The internsโ€™ tasks are anchored in the national governmentโ€™s National Employment Recovery Strategies (NERS) as well as the DOLEโ€™s Mission RACE or Rebooting Economies through Community Engagement that aims to create concrete strategies to deal with workers displaced by the pandemic. Under the Mission RACE program of the DOLE, each GIP beneficiary or government intern will be called as Healthy Economic Recovery officers or HERO. One of them, named as Local HERO, will be assigned to the City LGU PESO and will be tasked to supervise the implementation of the program at the barangay level. As to the selection of barangays provided with GIP slots, the first eleven Barangay LGUs that have established their respective Barangay PESOs were prioritized. These barangays are: Tina, New Carmen, San Rafael, Lancheta, Upper Katungal, Rajah Muda, San Antonio, New Lagao, Baras, San Pablo, and New Isabela. The government interns will complement the LGUโ€™s Public Employment Service Office (PESO) to carry out community engagements in the form of livelihood trainings and profiling of labor market situations in the barangays. By generating a true picture of the barangayโ€™s labor market, the government can subsequently identify and implement the necessary interventions to help the economy. The beneficiaries started rendering their duty in their respective barangays on June 1 and will continue their immersion in the next six months. Their outputs will be used by the DOLE and the City LGU in identifying specific interventions to be implemented. (LGU Information)
